Our globally recognized Universal Design program began in 2019 with a focus on using 3D design and 3D printing to develop our meaningful making program. Through our partnership with the University of Colorado, Build a Better Book, we were part of a National Science Foundation grant, providing real world empathy in engineering skills for local teenagers. Learn more about our NSF program here.
Our Universal Design program continues weekly on Wednesday nights with a focus on making the world a more user friendly place.

Halloween in the Village!
The ML Library Makerspace creates a unique Halloween treat for Teal Pumpkins at Halloween in the Village. Last year we created a glow in the dark movable friendly robot! What will we make this year??

Reserve a block of time with one of our Makerspace staff to learn 3D design, 3D printing, or set up a 3D print on one of our 3D printers. Please note there is a fee for Design Studio. Please register online. Design Studio is select Tuesdays at 11 am and Monday evenings 7 pm.
Mountain Lakes Free Public Library Makerspace Rules of Use
The Mountain Lakes Public Library Makerspace Policy
3D Printer Use and Access
The Makerspace’s 3D printers were acquired through grant funding and are therefore designated for the specific programs, educational activities, and approved projects for which the grant funding was awarded. As grant-funded equipment, the 3D printers are not available for unrestricted or general public use.
Priority for use will be given to Makerspace programs, classes, workshops, educational initiatives, and projects that align with the intended purpose of the grant funding. Requests for use outside of these activities may be considered on a case-by-case basis, subject to equipment availability, grant requirements, staff approval, and applicable Makerspace and Library policies.
Adult patrons may register for an available, designated time slot to work with a Makerspace staff member to prepare a 3D print for production. Preparation may include reviewing the print file, selecting appropriate print settings, and preparing the file for the Makerspace’s 3D printer. A $10 fee will be charged for this service. Registration and payment of the fee do not guarantee that a print will be approved or produced. All print requests remain subject to staff review, equipment availability, grant requirements, applicable law, and Library policy.
Students in grades 1–12 may use the Makerspace’s 3D printers by appointment with Makerspace staff. There is no fee for 3D printing services provided to students in grades 1–12. Student use must be supervised by Makerspace staff and is subject to equipment availability, staff approval, applicable law, grant requirements, and Library policy. Students may directly contact the Makerspace staff for an appointment: info@mountainlakeslibrary.org.
Makerspace staff reserve the right to limit, deny, or schedule access to the 3D printers to ensure compliance with grant requirements and to preserve the equipment for its intended programmatic purposes.
All 3D printing will be supervised by a Mountain Lakes Public Library Makerspace staff member. Staff will review the 3D designs using a 3D slicer application to ensure proper printing. Patrons may not independently operate, start, modify, or monitor a 3D printer without staff supervision.
Patrons should have no expectation of privacy regarding objects, models, files, or other materials submitted for, or produced through, the Makerspace’s 3D printing program. 3D print objects may be handled, viewed, stored, displayed, photographed, or otherwise accessed by Makerspace staff and other authorized individuals as necessary for operation, maintenance, instruction, quality control, or program purposes. Patrons should not submit materials that they consider confidential, sensitive, proprietary, or otherwise requiring privacy or restricted access.
The Makerspace will produce only objects that are lawful to possess, manufacture, or distribute under applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations. The Makerspace reserves the right to review, reject, or discontinue any print request that it reasonably believes may violate applicable law, Library policy, or the rights of others. Patrons are solely responsible for ensuring that submitted designs and requested objects comply with all applicable laws, including laws concerning intellectual property, prohibited items, weapons, and other regulated materials. The Makerspace will not 3D print any object that is:

Did you know that your Mountain Lakes Public Library co-published a book! In May 2025 we co-published Juniper and the Red Swoosh by Chi-Hoon Kim and Juniper Eisenberg. Through our partnership with Clovernook Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired we collaborated to create a multimodal book with colorful illustrations, large text, Braille, audio narration, and an innovative 3D designed and printed abacus called the 3D-Click.
Building on our Library’s successful universal design program with the low vision and Blind community and publication of Juniper and the Red Swoosh, the ML Library Makerspace launched its Braille Forward initiative.
Powered by Braille Gen, our in house developed Braille Translator and 3D Generation application we are working to create a Braille Forward community by:
Educating the general public about the power and beauty of Braille
Advocating for normalizing Braille in public spaces
Giving back by developing 3D-printed resources to bridge the blind and sighted worlds

Sound Start Babies
Our collaboration with Sound Start for Babies has grown wonderfully since 2018. We originally met Sound Start by sharing student universally designed tactile illustrated animal pages of Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?
Today we partner with Sound Start for Babies on a number of accessible resources for their students. Additionally, Sound Start educators Jackie and Lorraine lead ASL Musical Storytimes. Thank you Sound Start!
Wednesdays 7 pm – 8:45 pm, Saturdays 3:00 – 5:00 pm + Launch Days
Mountain Lakes Rocketry is proudly supported by Marotta Controls.
Our Team Tungsten is a 10-member team composed of high school age students. They work throughout the year on developing a rocket to compete in the American Rocketry Competition (ARC). In addition to being the only Library with a Rocketry team, Team Tungsten is one of the only teams out of 1100 that 3D designed and printed their entire rocket. They qualified for the 2026 ARC National Final Championship in Virginia.
ML Library Rocketry is expanding this year with a Team Iridium, with members in 8th – 10th grade.
